Suicide Squad (2016) Review

A bunch of music videos, strung together to make a confusing movie.

A group of bad guys are offered a chance to shorten their jail sentences by helping the government take care of other bad guys. This group ranges from a crazy girl with a bat, a super accurate shooter, all the way to a giant crocodile man. There’s a couple more people on the team, but like the movie, there’s too many to properly cover in this review.

Of the group, Harley Quinn and Deadshot are the focus points. It’s no big surprise because their corresponding actors are the higher billed ones on the cast. This may be one of the first big problems, because we spend so much time learning about their backstories, in music video style, we don’t get to learn much about good old Captain Boomerang, or Slipknot, who I probably didn’t learn anything about at all, for reasons.

When it comes to the plot, I guess they caused their own problem that needed solving. Using Echantress for whatever reason ultimately ended up in a big blue beam in the sky that our “heroes” need to stop. Turning people into zombie-ish warriors without any context is cool, I guess.

The real question is, why was The Joker in this movie? He doesn’t really do anything, other than being the reason for Harley to be Harley. We’ve heard that a lot of his scenes were cut, but at this point, it was cut so much that his presence doesn’t make any sense.

The biggest problem for me is the Theatrical Cut. Like Batman v. Superman, it’s been going through the grapevine that the Director’s Cut makes a lot more sense. My problem is, that if I spend however much I spend to watch in theaters, why can’t I have an already long Theatrical Cut make sense? For me, that is a big failure if they can’t make a story make sense for theaters. People can argue about the studio’s involvement all they want, but it was their choice to do what ended up on screen.

I wonder how the DCU is going to do after these recent movies. Personally, I thought that Suicide Squad was going to be the Saving Grace, but it ended up being as convoluted and overstuffed like BvS. If DC doesn’t dial in their movies, they may be in big trouble.

Recap

- Too many things to explain, not enough time
- They caused their own problem
- Music videos everywhere
