Howl’s Moving Castle 35mm (2004) Review

The moving castle in wonderful 35mm!

Two neighboring kingdoms are at war. Howl, a powerful wizard is doing what he can to intervene and stop it at all costs. What happens when an everyday girl gets put under a spell and gets caught in the middle of it all? Let’s find out in my review of Howl’s Moving Castle 35mm.

Sophie is a Hatter in a small town. She’s never believed in her confidence with men. After a run in with a witch, her chances at love are even slimmer when she has a spell put on her. This spell turned Sophie into a much older version of herself. Not wanting to freak her family out, she wanders out of town and happens upon the moving castle of a mighty wizard.

Being a film by the great Hayao Miyazaki, you can expect a magical journey from start to finish. This was one that I never quite understood until I rewatched it at this special 35mm showing. Maybe even up until now, I still don’t fully understand it, but it’s a spectacle to watch. Being able to watch a Hayao Miyazaki film in theaters, let alone in 35mm, was amazing. The graphics definitely hold up for being over a decade old. There is definitely a lot to digest behind this one, and some parts that I still need help with.

Whether you like “Anime” genre, most people would like this. This may not be the first Miyazaki film that I’d refer people to watch, but it’s still amazing. I hope to see more of this amazing director’s films on the big screen.
