New Girl Season 1 (2011) Review

Why Didn’t I Watch This Sooner!?

Coming off of a really bad breakup, Jess is in search of a place to live and new people to surround herself with. What happens when she moves in with a hopeless romantic bartender, a rich playboy, and a professional basketball player… previously in Latvia, let’s find out in my review of New Girl Season 1.

Jess is a school teacher that’s down on her luck after breaking up with her boyfriend of about 6 years. She reluctantly has a best friend who is a model. When Jess moves into a loft with 3 guys, this formula is bound to lead to some fun and crazy antics. You might think that everyone in the loft would throw themselves at her, but this show definitely breaks the mold and tells everyone’s stories as they experience their own relationships.

I may be late to the New Girl game, but I fell in love with these roommates immediately. Zooey Deschanel’s quirky personality separates this show from others of the same genre. Throughout the season, she tries her best to help everyone in their love lives as she tries to rebound back into her own. As we watch her journey, she is a bit of a hopeless romantic.

Nick is the broke bartender who tries to squeeze every penny by repairing everything in the loft, even if he doesn’t do the best job. He is a bit of a hopeless romantic himself. We can’t help but root for him to try to fall for Jess as he struggles to find a girl for himself. He even struggles to get over his ex.

Schmidt is Nick’s best friend and a rich playboy womanizer. He made his fortune off of one of his grade school friends who made it big. His only mission is to get some as many times as possible, until Jess and her best friend stumble into his life.

Cece is Jess’ best friend and a professional model. They’ve known each other since forever. At one point, she was discovered and became a model, while Jess grew up to be a school teacher. Reluctantly, she falls for Schmidt, but their relationship is so complicated.

Winston is Nick’s childhood friend who became a pro basketball player in Latveria. After an injury, his pro career is done and now he’s back to hang out with the gang. He and Schmidt fight over being top dog of the loft. We follow him in his struggle for love, and a new job.

The pilot episode sets the tone for the show. When Jess is stood up from a rebound date, the gang comes together to cheer her up. Even getting kicked out of a restaurant after singing “Time of my Life”, out loud. This creates the template for a lot of the stories in the series: setting up a problem, having a serious thing happen, and solving the problem as a team, all while having lighthearted fun.

This is a fresh sitcom that you shouldn’t pass up on. I’ve pretty much binged watched all of the episodes that are available for me to watch. This is definitely a show that makes you want to hang out with the cast. As of this season, they’re not perfect yet and I didn’t fully love them yet. But I can’t recommend this series enough. Watch it!
