Snotgirl (2016) #1 Review

Gotta Keep Up With Appearances, By Any Means Necessary.

Lottie Person is an up and coming fashion blogger in the glamorous city of Los Angeles. Being a fashion savant means that you have to keep up with appearances. For Lottie Person, she has a dark secret that no one can know about.

You might wonder why this book is called Snotgirl. Lottie has a bit of a problem with her allergies. Whenever they act up, snot runs uncontrollably from her nose. She’s had to see an allergist to try to tame it, but it’s still a problem. Because of this, she leads a double life, a High Fashioned Blogger and Allergy-ridden Girl Behind the Blog.

Like a lot of millennials today, Twitter and other social media help run her relationships with other people. At one point, she had a conversation with one of her friends through text, even though they were a few feet from her. Through social media, Lottie is also able to keep tabs on her ex, who seems to be seeing another girl.

***Warning: Spoilers***

While on a night out with a new friend, Lottie’s life seems to change immensely. This new friend is Caroline, another up and coming fashion blogger. At first she seemed perfect, but after a run in with Lottie’s ex, Caroline’s true colors show, leading to a major incident. Seeing him caused Lottie to panic, to the point of almost overdosing in the bathroom. When Caroline shows up, she found Lottie deep in her allergy problem. Seeing this, she assigned Lottie with a nickname that would change things from this point on.

Hearing about Bryan Lee O’Malley releasing a new series had me really excited. He is probably best known for creating the Scott Pilgrim books, a series that I liked a lot. Now he’s back but with a partner in crime in the form of artist, Leslie Hung.

The book has a unique style to it. It finds a nice place between comic book and manga art. It gives a cartoony look but allows to let the fashionable characters show off their style.

This book gives us a change of pace from the Superhero ones that I currently read. At first, I thought it was going to be just a high school genre type of story. But when the twist at the end happens, I was hooked. I can’t wait to keep reading!
