Jughead (2016) #9 Review

There’s a New Girl in Town, and She’s Bewitching.

With a new creative team, consisting of Ryan North and Derek Charm, it’s time to introduce love to Jughead, and this time it’s not food. This new team aren’t the only new one’s in town, but Sabrina The Teenage Witch is here too. Where does she show up? Let’s find out in my review of Jughead #9.

When the gang visits their favorite diner, they find out that a new mascot is working there to drum up business. After Jughead finds out that it’s a burger, he immediately falls in love. You might think he develops feelings for the person inside, but no, it’s the facade of the burger. He even daydreams of future burger babies. After mustering up the courage to ask her on a date, who shows up to the date isn’t what he was expecting.

***Warning: Spoilers***

Of course the girl on the cover show’s up to meet Jughead at the end of the book. Turns out that she’s new in town and found this mascot job in the meantime. For the longest time, Jughead has never been attracted to anyone, just food. There’s even been articles that believe that he’s a-sexual. This may still be true, because he was expecting a burger. We’ll only have to find out in the next issue.

This is the first issue that I picked up of Jughead in a while, mainly because of the art. I wasn’t too big on Erica Henderson’s art, recently known for her work on Squirrel Girl, but I like Charm’s new look. I sort of wished that Audrey Mok did some interior art, because I really like her variant cover. I feel that the male characters are drawn well, but the females feel like they’re drawn with a different style.

So far, it feels like North has a lot of text in his dialogues, which is a little fatiguing for my usual intake. I do like how he includes footnotes to give the reader some context on a few things that are going on. Hopefully the dialogue gets trimmed in future issues.

I look forward to more of this new team’s take on Jughead and the Riverdale gang. I like the new art and the introduction of the Teenage Witch. It does have some things that I don’t like as much, but I’d still recommend it. Check it out!
