Deadpool (2016) Review

The Merc with a Mouth is finally done right!

We’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time, and it’s safe to say that it did not disappoint. After the horrible rendition of the Merc in Wolverine Origins, I’m pretty sure we all lost faith in a Deadpool movie. Green Lantern didn’t help either. When the test footage and endless amounts of trailers started to surface, it helped regain the trust all audiences.

In the movie, we follow the origin story of this rendition of Deadpool. After succumbing to cancer, Wade Wilson was up for any cure. Undergoing a version of the Weapon X Program, he developed regenerative powers, to combat the disease, at the cost of his handsome looks. Now he is out for revenge on the people who did this to him.

***Warning: Possible Spoilers***

The movie has a cool back and forth setup for it’s narrative. It plays current events while catching the viewer up to learn how our characters got to that point. It sort of feels like a comic book version of Memento. We start with an awesome introduction of a particular freeze frame. Characters are introduced with an unconventional method of giving everyone humorous descriptions. As the credits roll, we also get funny visuals of the predicament that our star is in. This really sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Throughout the movie, we get what we expect from Deadpool as a character: Countless 4th wall breaks, witty remarks, and tons of violence. A way better take on the character than compared to that first rendition in that Wolverine movie. There are tons of nods to the comics, and probably twice as many jokes. Of the funniest are the jabs he takes at previous movies in the same universe.

This movie is for anyone who has permission to watch it. It’s regarded as one of the best Rated R movies in the box office. There are parts that may not be suitable for people under 17, but it sure has parts for anyone. Even I didn’t understand all the jokes, but it was still overall, a fun movie.
