Your Name (2016) Review

Switching Bodies Has Never Felt So Cute

Mitsuha is a girl that lives in a small rural town, the kind where everyone knows each other. Taki is a boy that lives in the big city of Tokyo, where there are tons of people. Both were living their lives as normal, until they both switched bodies for some reason. Whenever it happened, they would have to carry on each other’s lives without ruining it for each other. To help with this, they would leave diary entries on their phones to help catch them up with their lives.

Mitsuha has to keep up with her family traditions in cord making, while also being the daughter of the Mayor. Taki is trying his best to save money, and maybe impress his cute co-worker. Whenever they’d switch, they would put a wrench in each other's lives. One might try start dates for the other, and one might act like a total weirdo because of the “parts” that they don’t usually have.

After the night of the Meteor passing by Mitsuha’s area, it seems that the two have all of a sudden stopped switching places. After this, Taki has actually developed a liking to Mitsuha, but the thing is, he can’t get in contact with her. With only a mental picture of her town, Taki sets out to find the girl, that he has mysteriously been switching places with.

***Warning: Spoilers***

Halfway through the film, we learn the twist about what was really happening during the switches. The discovery of there actually being a time difference was really surprising and fresh. However, during this part, the storyline to save Mitsuha’s town sort of lost me. The Time Travel plot lines were sort of confusing as well. Some parts of it didn’t make sense, but that’s what happens when you write about that kind of plot. But I came back around when time speeds forward after that plot line.

The animation was top notch. They managed to integrate 3d graphics but keep a 2d animation look throughout. That being said, they were able to create realistic cinematography with nice camera movements. The world was really detailed, even Taki’s pencil drawings were done well.

This was a really fun and interesting watch. The most intriguing Anime that I have seen in awhile. It did have a few flaws, but it is still worth the watch, especially if you like the genre.
