The Martian (2015) Review

"We must save him!"

After a disastrous mission while on mars, a crew has lost one of their members and was pronounced dead on scene. Unknown to them, he actually survived and is now tasked with staying alive until someone comes to rescue him. What will happen to our stranded astronaut? Let’s find out in my review for, “The Martian.”

A sudden storm interrupts a crew’s research expedition on Mars. While attempting to disembark from the storm, Mark Whatney (Matt Damon), gets struck by debris, knocking him unconscious and making it impossible for the crew to find him. The crew leaves in failure of finding him, deeming him dead on site. Later, Whatney wakes up, having survived the storm. The problem he faces now, is making contact with others, without any sort of communication. In the meantime, he needs to find a way to survive. Being the botanist of the crew, he found a way to create grow potatos with his rations. Eventually, he found a way to contact NASA, but the question now is, “Is it worth it to save Mark Whatney?”

I had no idea what to expect when going into this movie. I haven’t watched a Ridley Scott movie in a while, but it’s about time I did. From beginning to end, I was invested in the survival of Matt Damon’s character. I felt a gamut of emotions as we followed him around. I could have gone without the graphic scene at the beginning when he is repairing his injury, but I guess that gives us the gravity of the situation that he’s in. I watched it in 3D, not IMAX 3D, but I don’t think it’s necessary to watch it in that format. Aside from the storm scene, I barely noticed any 3D throughout the rest of the movie. I liked the music as well, it’s no Guardians of the Galaxy, but it helped define each moment with the movie.

I’d recommend anyone watch this movie, if you can handle that gruesome part in the beginning. After that, it’s smooth sailing. Feel free to watch it in whichever format you want, but like I said, 3D isn’t all that needed.
