Batman ‘66 (2015) Vol. 1 TPB Review

The TV show antics, brought to you in print!

The era of Batman ‘66 has returned to you in the form of printed comics. This light hearted version of the Caped Crusader and his Boy Wonder grace the pages with their entertaining situations. What happens to this crime-fighting duo, we’ll find out in the first collection of comics.

This collection tells self-contained stories involving a villain and their evil plot in Gotham City. Whether it’s The Penguin and Mr. Freeze embargoing trade into Gotham by building their own country in the form of an iceberg, Mr Sandman incepting citizens to find The Batman, there is plenty of fun and mayhem to be had with this series.

At first, I had a tough time adjusting to the book, but I warmed up to it, a few stories in. I didn’t really grow up with Batman ‘66, so I wouldn’t have as much an attachment to it as people that did would. The villains and their stories are so far-fetched, you can’t help but smile at their evil plans. You also can’t help but read the dialogue in each of the character’s voices. At first I wasn’t too big on the art, but I warmed up to it as well. They were similar to pop art and Kirby dots. I really began to appreciate the techniques that we barely see in modern books.

Even if you don’t read the books in order, each issue is self-contained, so you can start anywhere you want in the series. Like I said, I didn’t have a big history with the series, but I ended up liking it enough to pick up the second volume. I hope readers out there end up liking this as well.
