Silk (2015-) #1 Review

"We've got a new spider in town!"

Did you know that Peter Parker wasn’t the only one to be bit by a radioactive spider? Previously unknown, Cindy Moon also received super powers, similar to those of the infamous Spider-Man. What happens when a new spider hero comes to town? Let’s find out in “Silk” #1.

We open up on a fight in progress. Having been already established as an up-and-coming super hero, Silk (Cindy Moon) is fighting with a new villain, Dragonclaw. As the fight pursues, we get a few panels of Cindy’s past. Before she was bit, she led a normal life with her family and friends. Eventually, we learn that Cindy was sent to captivity and her family is missing. We don’t know at this point yet why, but eventually we will. Currently, Cindy has taken up a job at the Daily Planet as a means to finding traces of her family. In another place, we find Dragonclaw meeting with Black Cat to take down Silk.

This is a nice new character and a welcomed edition to the Marvel Universe. Silk derives from the Spider-Verse event, where Spider-Men and Women from different universes united to fight a common foe. It’s interesting that we have a new Spider hero, and it’s not just a “girl version” of Spider-Man. Aside form similar powers, we get pretty different characters. Cindy’s Asian background and gender affect her character greatly. With this, we get to peer into the pressures of being a woman and Asian. We learn of the strictness of most Asian parents, a viewpoint that other ethnicities may not know about. The art of Stacey Lee is a breath of fresh air in the comic community. A lot of people say that her style is similar to manga, a good juxtaposition with Asian culture.

This whole book is a fresh take on comics, especially in this diverse world. This is a good book for anyone who is into comics. A good jumping on point for the Spider Universe.
