The Big Meeting
All of the major players in the Game of Thrones schedule to meet at Kings Landing in hopes of forming a truce for the coming threat of the undead. Jon Snows big gambit is the reward of their excursion past the wall, a captured wight. With this, he’s hoping to get Cersei to join their cause. But even with this revelation, there are still complications.
***Warning: Spoilers***
Being the finale of the penultimate season, this was probably the best episode of the season. Being off of the books, it certainly is a challenge to keep the high quality storytelling of George R.R. Martin going. Arriving to this checkpoint of the story was rough but the destination was great.
The whole meeting was filled with tension from the start. Even with the convenient saves throughout the season, it felt like a bloodbath could happen at anytime. With characters like The Hound and Euron in the mix, tensions were definitely high. Even after seeing a dragon and a wight for the first time, it seems that Cersei still has her own plan in the end.
While this is going on, it looks like the Stark kids are handling their own business back at Winterfell. After a build up throughout the season of what seems to be sibling fallout between Sansa and Arya, we get a surprise in the end. Tricking the audience into thinking that Arya was on trial, but it looks like the tables have finally turned on Little Finger. I was really surprised at how quick Arya executed him, that I even jumped a little. I’m finally relieved that the creeper is gone.
The episode had some of its shortcomings. Being a tv show, the CGI was hit or miss throughout the series, especially when CGI things interact with human actors. I caught a big Star Wars special edition moment when Daeny was stepping off of her dragon. You know, the Han Solo stepping on Jabba’s tail thing. The wight part was pretty good though. Other than that, there were some convenient story plots that wrote characters out from the huge meeting. I guess Bronn and Pod can just walk off and grab drinks, while Missandei just disappears altogether.
And then, unknowing incest happens, but we’ll skip that, you know what’s going on. And finally, the Undead are on the move in explosive fashion.
This was a great episode. It’s really gotten me excited for the last season, but we’re going to have to wait a while for that. I might have to rewatch the series to learn more, as I did sort of rush through to catch up to everyone.
