Kong: Skull Island (2017) Review

Welp, the King is back again.

When scientists find a new island in the middle of nowhere, they employ the aid of the military to safely escort them there. Unknown to them, the scientists are on the hunt to discover new creatures. Upon arrival, they run across the biggest one, a ginormous ape named Kong. After their convoy is ripped to shreds by the big ape, it’s up to the remaining survivors to escape with their lives.

This is a pretty straightforward giant monster movie. People get stuck on monster island, several tertiary characters die abruptly, good guys get out. Straightforward is the key here. We don’t get much depth on anything, it’s just pure action, good action, and some people are fine with that.

The acting spotty, some did good and some felt out of place. Tom Hiddleston was a heroic leader, Sam Jackson was crazy, John C. Reilly was funny, John Goodman is stern, and Brie Larson was caring. Everyone else falls to the background.

The CGI felt outdated. At points in the movie, it felt like the monsters were hastily pasted into the scene. They did not blend in well with their environments. It definitely doesn’t feel up to par with similar movies in recent years.

This is a simple action-monster movie. If you’re here for a meaningful and heartfelt story, you’d better look else where. The action is fun, but it has a few downfalls. If you’re into these movies, you’d like it, but in the end, it’s just okay. Make sure you stay until after the credits!
