Singin’ in the Rain (1952) Review

If you had to choose one Musical, this is the one.

Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are Hollywood’s favorite Silent Film couple. When sound is introduced, a problem arises, because Lina doesn’t have the best voice for recording. It’s very high pitched and unpleasant to the ear. On a chance meeting, Don runs into a stage performer in Kathy Seldon, who changes his life from that point.

I was inspired by La La Land to uncover one of the biggest influences to the film, Singin’ in the Rain, and I don’t regret it one bit. The long takes, the difficult routines during those long takes, the catchy songs, and the classic love story, are all big influences to any musical today.

Each music routine is a great achievement. Whether it’s the opening Fit as a Fiddle, classics like Make ‘em Laugh or Singin’ in the Rain, or the astonishing Broadway Ballet, these are all great pieces of musical theater and should be celebrated and remembered.

If you like musicals, this is a must-see, because it is a big influence to today’s films. Even if you haven’t seen one, this is a great jumping on point.
